I have a 50D and will be getting the Canon 10-18 EF-S lens soon. I would like to have any lens corrections to occur in the camera if possible but since the 10-18 EF-S lens is relatively new my camera doesn't have that info. Is there a way to download this lens correction info to my camera?

OR, should I do any corrections in Lightroom? If this way would be better, can the data for this lens be obtained and downloaded into LR3?

Thanks,

John

Your camera has correction data for some lenses preloaded. If the 10-18 isn't one of them, you can load it using the EOS Utility software.

I *think* the in-camera lens correction applies to peripheral illumination (i.e. light falloff) and some degree of chromatic aberration. Lightroom can also correct for distortion. I don't know if both types of in-camera correction apply to RAW or just JPEG.

Canon's lens data today include information regarding vignetting, chromatic abberation and distortion. It depends on the camera if it can apply one or more of these pieces of information.

Within the Canon sphere, you can also do this in Digital Photo Professional. DPP also allows downloading more comprehensive lens data, which allows for more optimized lens correction to be carried out in post processing.

A list of lenses supported by Digital Photo Professional Ver.4.2.31 can be found at http://support-hk.canon-asia.com …nts/HK/EN/8202598200.html (external link) and the EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM is listed.

The procedure for registering the lens aberration correction data using EOS can be found at http://support-hk.canon-asia.com …nts/HK/EN/8202118200.html (external link)

I just checked LR 5.7 and the 10-18. There is a lens correction profile if you shoot raw. No profile for JPG. The 10-22 profile works OK for vignetting, but it way over corrects distortion. Better to work manually if you have to shoot JPG.
