Quite the biggun. Nice catch! Quick story: my wife, my best friend, and I went on our annual Christmas season photo tour last weekend, about a 300-mile trip. On the way back we were trucking hard up the climb on I90 from Vantage to Ryegrass (eastern Washington, crossing the Columbia) in the early evening darkness. For those who don't know the area, it is very rural, unpopulated and dark. Really dark. Traffic was light, but suddenly a car about 150 feet ahead of us made an abrupt maneuver. Being the ever diligent driver that my friend is, he backed off a bit to see why the other driver did that, keeping a wary eye on the situation. As we passed the spot where the other car had maneuvered, there was a lovely and quite huge Elk cow standing on the shoulder right inside the fog line. Yikes! She just stood there, staring nonchalantly in the direction of traffic as if she were waiting on a bus. She almost seemed as if she was familiar with these large noisy things moving along their grey path, and how to negotiate their presence. One always hopes this is so, but sometimes idealism loses out to reality and subsequent tragedy. This climb is approximately ten miles long and is in a relatively narrow canyon. The canyon is known as an Elk migration area, so we always tread carefully. Yet it is always a bit of a surprise when you do see one right there, up close and personal. (especially peering out at you in the darkness of the night) Too bad it was too dark to get a shot on the fly. Would have been an interesting one Cool encounters.. This Moose was with three or four others.. I wipped around to see a truck going around one crossing the road. I should have gone for a look today but never got out.
