Yes, Wapiti are Elk. . Although I believe that Red Deer can eventually grow much larger, more complex antlers than our Elk, if they are permitted to love long enough.

I would like to go to New Zealand someday to photograph Red Deer in the rut, but I have not yet found a place that seems like it would give me the kinds of opportunities I am looking for.

Wow! . That is a lot of different species to keep up with! . Do they all rut pretty much at the same time of year? . Or is it spread out a lot?

Our Elk rut in September, and the Whitetail and Mule Deer rut in November. . It helps that the Elk are so much earlier, but if one wants to specialize in both Whitetail and Mule Deer, that is a problem because they rut simultaneously, and you pretty much have to focus on one or the other. . They co-exist in many of the same places, but the best places to photograph Whitetails are not the same places where you can best photograph Muleys.

Our Whitetail do the same thing, with an extreme difference between their summer coats and winter coats. . Muleys do also, but not to quite the same extent, as their summer coats aren't quite as red as the Whitetail's summer coats.

So then, what is the difference between a buck and a stag?

And also, what about the term, "hart"? . I know that is used in some parts of the world to refer to a male deer. . Do they use that term where you live?

I love talking about deer and learning about them and it is cool to learn about deer in other parts of the world.

right to your Q's ,with the caviat I am no expert,just enthusiastic about deer.....

Maybe our red deer antlers how they are compared to your elk,because of selective deer management over so many years???? We have no apex predators Tom, there is nothing left,so sadly deer numbers have to be kept in check,both for the habitat and them selves

i'm sure alot of estates cull very selectively on the male side as heads are prized as trophys so over alot of time that manifest it'self in the more complex antlers of our reds,but I can only thoerise Tom,i'm not sure!!

I don't really know why our deer nomenclature is so specific tom,,who knows a fall out from stalking ,I just don't know why we call a red male a stag and a fallow a buck,but certainly two stalkers whisperingin hushed tones,might need to be hevr y specific,So there are a host of terns like pricket used for a yearling along side the male female and young names. I haven't a clue on heart,it;s little used in our society,apart from PUB names it's an old word that's for sure.

The rut for fallow red and sika(I believe) around mid to late oct,roe much earlier july aug. The roe rut I have never seen few do I suspect,I've seen a bit of sparing once,between a young buck and older mature adult,but they were just playing !!! Muntjac breed all year round here. Chinese I am frankly unsure I think they are only over in Norfolk Tom,little seen and little photographed.

anyway back to topic a young fallow caught while trying to catch up with the rut. The fallow rut canbe specatcular,they throw each other in the air,i've seen it ,but never been able to get the images I'd like.
