I am fairly new here and wondered if anyone knew of birding areas around the Capitol region?

Lots of places, depending on what type of birds you are after.

Here are some resources:

Southern Adirodack Audubon birding locations: http://www.southernadirondackaudubon.org/birding/birding.html (external link)

Capital Region Audubon Chapter: http://www.capitalregionaudubon.org/ (external link)

Hudson Mohawk Bird Club locations: https://hmbc.net/content/where-bird (external link)

If you are on Facebook, look up Dr. Gordon Ellmers in Ft Edward. He is vet and a serious bird photog. He posts almost daily and identifies the location the photo was taken in. He mostly birds around Ft Edward. There is an IBA there (Important Bird Area) where a winter raptor show is held every March. There's also alot of bird activity on the Feeder Canal Trail and Towpath Road in Ft Edward.

There are bald eagles along the Mohawk from Waterford to Schenectady, primarily around the locks / falls. Also eagles by Cohoes Falls.

There's heron rookery in Ballston Spa. A great horned owl lives there too but I haven't seen him.

There are eagles along the Hudson near Easton / Schuylerville.

There are lots of hawks on side roads by farm fields in Washington County.

That should get you started!
