I decided my mk1 rig was not holding the lens firmly enough so decided to update it.
Mk2 10X microscope lens camera setup.
Using EOS to M42 adapter £5, set of M42 extension tubes £10. M42 to RMS cone £20 and a cheapish Olympus 10X plan lens £28. All new either from Ebay or Amazon.
The narrow end makes it easier to rest the lens on my hand and get a reasonable angle on a potential subject on a surface.

The bug shots below were all live bugs taken handheld in situ and focus stacked using zerene. It's not the easiest thing to get the focus increments but it is just about possible handheld to get some worthwhile results. Something to plat with during the Winter.

Good results :)

quick questions:

-whats the working distance?
-does the "lens" have some kind of aperture control? if not, would it be possible to use a normal lens instead of the ET and set the aperture there (not even sure if it would do something to the image)?

Thanks all for the comments :)

Paulo - working distance around 5mm. No aperture control. The lens should be at it's optimum aperture.
You can put an microscope objectives onto a medium length telephoto lens in fact you are supposed to do that with infinity focus microscope objectives. I suspect though you would not get anything useful from using the lenses aperture control.
