Does it pay to buy a Canon 2x iii extender for bird or wildlife photography ? I already have the canon 1.4x ii for my version1 of the 600mm f4. There's times I could use the extra reach but would it be better to use the 1.4 and just crop the image more. And is it possible to use 2x for slow moving birds in flight ? I'll be using it with a Canon 7s mark ii.

Troy, I think you could get good results with a 2x on your 600 f4 and a 7D2. I use the 2x on the 600 f4 IS II all the time. Mostly with a full frame camera. I also use it occasionally with a 7D2. In fact I did get my best photo of an Eagle in flight with the 7D2 at 1,200mm. Here's the image:

The v2 of the 600mm is probably a bit sharper than the v1 so I suspect it might help to stop down 1/3 or 2/3 when using the 2x. It is a very small focal length so it isn't easy to find a subject especially handheld.

I had a opportunity to see my first Brown booby in WA state a few weeks ago. Unfortunately the bird was about 1.5 miles away (according to google earth). It was flaying around for about 40 minutes so I had an opportunity to try both a full frame and the 7D2 on the subject both at 1,200mm. I ended up with more keepers and better focus in general on the full frame but 2 of the best from the 7D2 were actually pretty good. They come out with more pixels but I'm not sure if I'm getting more definition than the full frame. I made a collage of 6 images. The two upper left one are from the 7D2 and the other 4 are from the 1Dx. Each of the six images is cropped at 100% so you are actually seeing every pixel on the bird which is not a lot. At that distance there are so many variable I'm not sure if one could really draw any conclusions.

In conclusion If you have the money give it a shot. If you buy from a company like B&H or Adorama you can return it in 30 days fr a full refund if you don't think it is worth it.

Best
Doug

I use the 2XII on my 500mm f/4L IS version 1 on occasion. There have been times it was a game changer. I say go for it.

When I use the Version 1 lens with the matching MkII 2X, I usually stop down to f/11.

I echo what Doug and Jake said. I think it's worth it Troy. The 2X iii is connected to my 600mm v2 and MKIV most of the time. Also to my 600mm v1 before I sold it. Like Jake said stopping down gave better results on the 600mm v1.

Up until the end of 2013 I had the Canon 600 F4 L IS (mk1) and I found the Canon 2 x Mk2 to be marginal. However the Canon 2 x Mk3 is significantly better. Af will be slow and you will need good to very good light but it can/will reward you with good images that would not be obtainable otherwise.
Realistically a 2 x extender on this sort of lens is really for emergencies but they can work well if conditions are right. If you do decide to get one then get the Canon Mk3, my Mk2 was mediocre at best, the Mk3 is actually useful.

The 2xIII is great. Here is some with the 600mm + 2xIII

(these are also cropped significantly)

(~70% crop)

There are times I would regret not having a 2X for use with my 500. It can be a game changer, especially the Canon 2X Mk III, as stated above.

Go for it!
