Try composing this type of image with a greater depth of focus. Too much is lost to the shallow focus. Since this is a Lytro image, you can select a much better composition.

Gave it a greater Focus Spread and stopped down to f/8.

I think the change you made improves the image

Thank you.

Still learning the 'dynamics' of the illum.
The advantage of a Lytro image is that one can change f-stops and focus plane (range) in post processing.
The disadvantage is that these parameters are not changable in a static jpeg image. (Duh)
The only place where one can refocus an image and grab the picture to 'swing around in 3D' is in the Lytro gallery.
It is not possible to embed a Lytro gallery image in this forum, hence the external link.
I can try to create a moving GIF.

What is it like taking pictures with the camera? How flexible is it, and what options are there in terms of lenses? What are the capabilities for post processing? The image is much more complex than a "typical" digital image.

The illum has a fixed 30-250mm lens with a 'fixed' aperture of f/2.
It has no viewfinder so you rely on a LiveView screen. Being used to a Canon it feels a bit slow.
From the deepsleep modus to "ready for action" takes about 10 seconds. The Android part has to boot.
From sleep to action takes about 1 second.

The illum is no speedmonster.
Before you take a picture you have to think Focal Range instead of Focal Plane.
To take the most advantage of the camera you have to think in a 3D composition, foreground - main subject - background.
But sometimes it is; main subject - mid section - background.
PP is done in the Lytro Desktop which looks like a stripped down LR.
Look at the video in HD for the hands-on and sliders; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JbERFPWNyU (external link)

Pro:
Able to focus on a subject very close to the front lens.
Adjust f-stop and focus range in PP
Tilted touchscreen
ISO priority !
Always f/2 so no Av mode.
Unique pictures (live pictures)
3D pictures.

Con:
Every picture has to be processed in the Lytro Desktop before PP can be done.
Processing takes a lot of time. About 30 seconds per picture on my Core i5 2.6Ghz 8GB.
40 megaray's translate in a static Jpeg of 4 megapixels.
No remote control via WiFi.
Not as sharp as a Canon lens.
Not easy to operate with one hand.
A living picture cannot be printed, no refocus on a canvas print  .
LR and PS do not understand the .lfp files the illum produces.
