Sound starts in sync but the longer the video goes the further off it gets

Do I need to change settings somewhere? I was using a Zoom recorder and the camera on my computer.

Heya,

The FPS of the video will be a big hint.

Very best,

Take a look at the original video recording file. Look at the settings you're compressing/mixing with. Make sure you're not changing the FPS.

Very best,

The internal clocks of the two devices aren't running at precisely the same rate, with the audio device being the culprit--it's proceeding slightly faster or slower. It's not an FPS issue. You will have to very slightly vary the audio rate to compensate.

Good thing I stumbled upon this thread. I have a corporate interview to video tomorrow. My first time doing something like this. It will be a 2 hour long video and I'm planning to record audio separately. If I should at 24 FPS @1080, will the audio from Zoom H1 be sync'd correctly or will I need to adjust in post? I'm planning to sync up audio using PrePro's audio syncing feature.

It will depend on the camera, if you have one that can also record the sound from the internal mics, then you would be able to sync the start and finish of the audio tracks recorded by the zoom H1 to the audio from the camera. You should be able to get the software to make enough of an adjustment to achieve the required results. Having an easy way to sync both the start and finish of the audio should do the trick.

so then it shouldn't matter if I'm recording 1080 @24 FPS or 720 @60 FPS cause the internal mic of the 70D will record the video and then I can just sync with the good audio from the Zoom H1? Basically, the issue presented by the OP won't impact me, even if I record 2 hours of continuous audio/video?

Yes. The extra thing you might want to do is make sure there is a distinctive sight/sound syncing cue at the start when both recorder and camera are rolling--the traditional "clapper" (which might just be you in front of the camera clapping your hands). If you want to be extra careful, you can also clap at the end before shutting off the recorder and camera.

If you're recording with a DSLR, remember that you can't continuously record for more than 29 minutes and 59 seconds--the camera will cut itself off. So if possible, you should do a pre-emptive shut-down/restart of both camera and recorder during predictable pauses of the activity. If that's not possible, let the recorder keep running and just do a pre-emptive restart of the camera at those same pauses--you'll have to sync each camera restart separately.

Totally forgot about the recording limitation. Thank you!

And, be sure to set the sample rate to 48KHz on the audio recorder. Almost all video cameras default to this standard.

Some editing software will handle two different sample rates on the timeline; in others you have to rerender the audio. Setting everything up at 48KHz avoids any issues.
