Hello,
I just got my first DSLR a Canon 40d. Very exited to start discovering, learning and taking photos of the Sunrise, Sunsets, and portraits of my kids. Any advice on the best W/A for landscape on a budget in the $75.00 - 150.00 range? Not sure if this is the place for the question so please feel free to direct me. I hope it is as I've been looking at some great work done by the many people on this forum for a couple years now. Any insight, direction, tips would be awesome.
Thanks in advance,

Stephen

If $150 is your max, then the Canon 18-55 IS is a great all-around lens to learn on. Once you get more serious about landscape photography, you will probably want to get a wider or longer lens, but those will cost considerably more.

I use a Canon 18-55 IS on my Rebel T1i. It's actually an incredibly good lens for the size, weight, and price. If I was in your situation, it would be my #1 choice.

Here's a used one at B&H for pretty cheap.

Good luck!

If you want to spend a bit more, the Canon 10-22 and the Tokina 11-16 are both excellent Wide Angle lenses for APS-C. Unfortunately, the price point you are at is very limiting. There are very few lenses that you can get for <$150, even on the used market. For the money you're looking to spend, the 18-55 is probably your best and only option.

Buy what you can afford now and do all the learning and practice you can. A good lens can make a difference, but at this point it's more important to learn and you can always upgrade later.

I haven't read a lot of photography books but I have found these two helpful:

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson
The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos by Michael Freeman

There is a ton of info online, but I find that sometimes it's nice to read a book.

Have fun!

I generally don't do landscapes, but experience with WA lenses tells me that everything crammed into one image will make everything look very small. have you thought about using what you already have to make a panoramic image?

That seems to be an excellent starting point. Since I've purchased the body only this would be a good lens to get started with as a first lens.

Thank you!
