These things change a lot, and my search fu is weak, apparently. Lots of card talk, but I have a specific question and I appreciate your indulgence. This is a pretty technical question and I'm pretty technically ignorant.

I understand that when the 60D came out, the Class 10 was recommended (for shooting RAW bursts and for video performance). Since then I believe the UHS standards were developed, not around when the 60D was released, I believe. And from what I've gleaned, the 60D does not take advantage of the UHS speed advantage.

I'd like to get the best (fastest) cards my 60D can actually use, and price is no object, except that I'd rather not pay up for functionality I cannot access. In other words, I'm not looking for cheap cards, I'm looking for premium cards, just not more than I can take advantage of.

The amount of card types at Amazon is simply making my head spin-- Ultra, Extreme, Professional, I'm paralyzed at the moment. I want to order several for an upcoming long vacation, and would appreciate any advice from you 60D users who understand this stuff.

Thanks! :)

I'm thinking these are not too expensive, and might fit the bill. I do not shoot much video, but might on this vacation, and 32 seems a good size for me to stock up on. I'd love someone to tell me that's a good choice before I pull the trigger.

Thanks again.

Class 10 for 60D is correct. I'd think twice about 32GB cards. Unless you regularly shoot that much, they seem like a waste of money to me. I've been using digital cameras for ever. High-end P&S for about 8 years, and SLRs for about 6 years. On my P&S, currently G15, I've never filled up a 4GB card shooting JPG. I use 16GB cards in my SLRs and have only filled that card once, ever. Paying extra for 32GB cards would be a waste of money for me. For you, it depends on how you shoot. Multiple smaller cards will also come in handy when a card fails. It happens.

I prefer LEXAR cards, but I'm not sure brand matters as long as you get legit cards.

I have a mixture of 16 and 32GB memory cards, 16GB for backup. Get the 32GB version, the price isn't that different.

This is currently the best bang for the buck card for DSLRs.

@Bassat

Thanks! Yes, I was wondering if I'd use that much, but I'm planning on shooting RAW this trip. Still, the 16GB are probably plenty fine, now that I think about it.

@ Nethawked, thanks for the specific recommendation, I will get some of those. I feel more confident because of the recommendation.

Thanks much! :)

Forgive my ignorance as well, but aren't the UHS cards just as inexpensive these days? And if you upgrade anytime soon, you will be able to use the card to it's full potential. BTW, My backup camera is a 600D , which came out after the 60D. Does it use UHS cards to full potential or not?
Cheers,
Col.

With my 6D if I shoot RAW and JPEG at max resolution, it does not take long at all to fill a 16GB card. Went to a wild animal park and just riding the tram around shooting quick pics I filled 2 16GB cards and ran out of storage. Was really upset with that. I only purchase 32 and 64GB cards now and look for sales on name brand cards. Never had a problem with SanDisk, Lexar or Sony. I watch CanonPriceWatch for sales.

Obviously it depends on the photographer, but like Bassat, I rarely fill 16GB in a day. That is a lot of pics. Two full 16GB cards? How many shots is that, 2000? How do you find the time to review so many, let alone edit them?

For a vacation, I can see taking big cards if you won't be able to store them on a laptop or other media.

With the newer cameras there are folks that test the cards to see which are the fastest. Card are (certainly used to be) rated for read speed and so could vary significantly in write speed for the 'same' apparent card speed.

http://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/canon-70d/fastest-sd-cards/ (external link)

Looking at the 70D results there are a lot of cards with similar speeds. Now I don't know about SD cards, but for CF cards the larger cards are generally faster with 32Gb being about the best 'band for the buck' - i.e. sufficiently faster than their 16Gb counterparts and not much more expensive per Gb.

Seeing as the card ratings for those tested on the 70D range from 60 to 95 Mb/s, I would choose one of those which would be the one linked to above by Nethawked.

Conservatively about 550 full RAW CR2 images from a 6D will fit on a 16GB card. This number goes south quickly if one decides to take a few minutes of HD video. 16GB is fine for most people, it's more important to have the right RW speed and a couple of backups than the actual size itself.
