Sorry if this seems a daft question, but I could have sworn I read somewhere that the Yongnuo TX could trigger the Canon 58) EXII (or any any EXII series) directly, ei: without the need for a 622 attached to the flash.

Now I can not seem to find mention of this. Did I misread somewhere?

If this is not possible, then why is there an IR port on the 622s? If not to trigger flash, what purpose does that serve?

I believe you need a 622c hooked up to the Canon 580 for the 622TX to control it.

You may well have read it, before it was appropriately deleted. The first flash to have a built-in 622 protocol receiver built in is the recently-released YN685 speedlite.

If this is not possible, then why is there an IR port on the 622s? If not to trigger flash, what purpose does that serve?

Well, the LED on the end emits a near-IR light for pre-focus, without being too distracting. The 622 system has no connection with light pulse communications (Canon Wireless).

Knowing a lot about almost nothing!

Thank you, that makes sense. I forgot the IR was not what triggered Canon flash that it was pulses. "duh"
