This lady is past her prime and I was too cheap to replace her just yet...
Anyhow, I applied some funky lighting using my, adjustable colors, LED lights.
Then stacked and merged to 40"

Not sure I understand the "40 inches" bit?

How many images in the focus stack?

On my screen the background looks a bit strange - large blocks? - perhaps making it all black?

Nice and funky rose.

He isn't stacking them (or only stacking them), he does the "panoramic dance", ie. he takes a ton of shots in a spiral or grid format and merges them to get a result as if he used a high resolution camera. The merging is causing the effects you are seeing.

I will point you to this "fun" post: https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=17775358

I was wondering if there was any other reason to taking a panoramic macro.

So the OP will print this to 40"?

I hope not, at least not until all the stairstep effects have been blended out, and the ghosting/chromatic effects on the edges of the outer petals are addressed. Once those were taken care of, it would be a nice print.

I haven't been that successful using roses with the "stack and merge technique"...not sure why.
but, my lily's and orchids have turned out great.
BTW, I'm gonna spring for the 5Ds R during a black Friday Event. :-D
