Earlier this summer I upgraded my laptop to a mid 2014 macbook pro retina, 2.5 ghz,512 ssd and 750m graphics card.

Looking to buy a monitor for primarily photo editing of portraits or landscapes which will be printed or sold as digital images to clients. If it could work for video as well that would be fine but not critical. I've read so many things about monitors and am just not sure what to do since this is my first purchase. I am considering a Nec PA272W-BK-SV monitor which is a wide gamut monitor for around $1200.00. If 4k is useable and would work properly with my laptop above I would consider it.

I've tried looking on retouching web sites and the above Nec monitor is mentioned fairly often. Not seeing so much of 4k being mentioned, but maybe I'm missing something?

User recommendations?

I like your monitor choice.
I would personally go with a wide color gamut monitor rather than 4K for photo editing purposes.

I use this monitor along with an i1diplay Pro. Fantastic choice.

The NEC PA series models are excellent displays. NEC has a 4K PA-series monitor, but unfortunately it's 32" and $2800 with SpectraViewII :)
