My 430 EX II arrived today. This is the first Canon brand flash unit I have ever purchased (been a Nikon user for the past several decades).
I am impressed by its construction! I currently own a pair of Nikon SB 800's, a Vivitar 285 HV, Sunpack 555 and have owned several other flashes in the past. Compared to the flashes I currently own and have owned I am impressed at how solid the 430 EX II feels.
The locking mechanism seems pretty secure; having to press the release button prior to sliding the lock off will prevent accidental locking release.
The buttons and control layout seem easily accessable. Also, the built in wide angle panel does not look as delicate/flimsy as on other flash units I own. The tripod stand is a neat little thing to have especially if I plan on using the flash off the camera remotely.
My only minor gripe so far is with the case it came with. The padded case is well built and appear to be rugged, however it lacks a belt loop to attach it to my belt. No big deal though, I will come up with an easy fix (will probably sew on a velcro belt loop to the back of the case).
Overall my first impression so far is good. I will test it this weekend. ☺
