The 70-200/4 IS is a little sharper than the non IS, both the 2.8 and 4.0 ones, but all are really good. The f4 IS version adds the gasket at the flange mount, at least from what I remember, so it's sealed a little better. The 2.8 II is slightly sharper than the 4 IS.

Canon 7D/350D, Σ17-50/2.8 OS, 18-55IS, 24-105/4 L IS, Σ30/1.4 EX, 50/1.8, C50/1.4, 55-250IS, 60/2.8, 70-200/4 L IS, 85/1.8, 100/2.8 IS L, 135/2 L 580EX II, 430EX II * 2, 270EX II.

The IS version is a total optical upgrade over the original. The only thing they have in common is the color and the aperture. The IS version is much better lens and the 4 stop IS makes it a much more usable lens. I've owned both and the IS is sharper.

Thank you for clearing that up.

Am I right in thinking you can turn IS off as well.

Of course, but there is no reason to other than when using it on a tripod. Don't get caught up in myths regarding the downside of IS.

The only downside I see to IS is the cost. I like the IS on my EF 35mm. I need it on my 70-200 f/4. Buy the tool you need.
