St Mary's Anglican Church, Hagley, Tasmania
This attractive church in the Gothic style was designed by the noted London architect Richard Cromwell Carpenter in association with Tasmanian architect Henry Hunter. The foundation stone was laid in 1861 and the church opened the following year. Constructed in bluestone, it consists of a nave with south aisle, chancel, tower and spire, the latter built in 1932 to the design of Launceston architect Hubert East

St. Mary’s Anglican Church as well as the village of Hagley is closely associated with the life of Sir Richard Dry (1815-1869). Dry was Tasmania's first native-born Premier and the first Australian to receive a knighthood. His father, Richard Dry senior, was an Irish political exile. Following in his father’s footsteps, Richard Dry was one of the key figures in the fight to end transportation of convicts and was influential in drafting the Tasmanian constitution. He was elected to the Legislative Council as member for Launceston in 1851 and was unanimously elected Speaker from 1851–54. He served as Premier from 1866 until his death in 1869. In many ways, St Mary’s is a memorial to his legacy.

The first ‘Anglican’ church in Hagley was a small brick church built 1847 that was later acquired by the Presbyterians. In 1856 Sir Richard Dry donated 13 acres of land on a hillside above the village for a new bluestone church to be built along with a rectory.

Nice clear shots and interesting reading, Richard. When I first saw these pictures I immediately thought that the church could fit anywhere in our UK countryside and be accepted as normal, then I read your comment further down.
I assume that the bluestone is your local stone.
How about some interior pics?:-)
Re the memorial stone, infant/child mortality seems high - but was not unusual in those days- a country’s history lies in its graveyards - I have heard it said.
Thanks

Thanks Ray
It was locked but one of those links showed a bit of interior.
It's an hours drive from here and first time I've visited it despite saying to myself countless times over the past 50 years I'd love to visit it.
It sits high on a hill and the spire is visible for miles.

Yes local stone. It's basalt, known locally as bluestone.

Infant mortality was far too common sadly, but probably not much difference at your end then.
Looked up dads history over Christmas. Twins died soon after birth! Dad was one of another set of twins that lived to a ripe old age

Fron about the 12th century, but needs a little TLC? A beautiful, peaceful place.

My ambition for a good while is to grow old disgracefully. So far my wife tells me that I am doing really well!

St James Church. Isle of Grain. Kent. UK.
Complete with a Christmas tree on the top of the tower.
A very remote location on tip of a peninsula where the River Thames meets the sea.

The church dates to the 12th century and has undergone several major restorations, with the small tower being built as late as 1903-5.

some info on the Isle of Grain.
In 2013 our 'friend' Boris was proposing (among other grand ideas) to turn the Island into a new London airport - not exactly favoured by the local population. It failed.:-)

Looks like part of the restoration involved filling in a few windows.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.
