I hope the OP doesn't mind me chiming in here. I spent hours over the course of a couple days shooting a wasp nest in mid summer (when they're very active), with a working distance of about a foot. Lying down, I even put my head directly under the nest and shot a few using a point & shoot from less than a foot, because there wasn't room for my SLR. Of course I've shot individuals from time to time as well. Never got stung, or even bothered. Wasps and hornets aren't ordinarily the aggressive boogy-bugs people make them out to be.
