Following a post by Hinson on this forum (https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1432627) I started exploring the manual and testing some more obscure features of this camera that are really useful. First was the "Hand-held night shot" that gives amazing results - as I mentioned in that thread.
Now I have found another useful trick: "One push AE" can be assigned to a function button (I use Fn4).
"One push AE" is used to instantly change the shutter speed and/or aperture if the viewfinder (or LCD screen) shows that correct exposure is not possible at the current settings.
For example, if I am shooting in M mode or S mode and the subject I'm shooting moved into shadow with considerably less light, my viewfinder would probably start showing (usually by items flashing red) that the exposure was wrong. Normally I would then have to rotate a wheel or alter a setting to correct the exposure, and while doing so might miss the shot - if I was shooting wildlife, for example. But by pressing one easily accessible function button (set to "One push AE") the camera instantly adjusts and I can probably still get a decent shot. I've tested this and it really works!
