I need to do back ups to 2 external hard drives...What is a nice simple program for me to get?. I have been manually copying files for years but I am replacing my drives and want a program that will do backups to my 2 external drives so they are mirror copies of each other.
Are the any free copies to download or should I buy a decent program? I am clueless...
Many thanks..

What operating system? If you're on Mac, you could use Time Machine. It's free and part of OS X.

If you are "PC" savvy and can write a batch file check xxcopy (note the extra "x"). Amazingly versatile.

Read my windows backup software review here (external link).

Note that copying and mirroring is not a backup. If you corrupt your primary (virus, randomware, bad RAM) that corruption spreads to the mirror and you lose it. You want something that does incremental backups and versioning. I think CrashPlan software does this and lets you back up to another PC free, it's only if you use their data centers for backup they charge you.

Agreed about the need for incremental backups and versioning. Crashplan can indeed backup to a local drive or another PC, but restoring requires being able to authenticate with their servers. If you can't do this for any reason, the backup is useless. I use and recommend Crashplan for fully automatic off-site backup, but not for local backups.

What I meant was incremental backups to both external drives so they are identical...not a mirror of my primary drive..also my PC is not connected to the Internet, so much less chance of virus or the like...
A friend has mentioned Syncback free. Have you any experience with that?

I had bad RAM in my PC for a couple of years before I worked that out. At the time I used a mirror, not a proper backup. As a result of that my backups became partly corrupt. Your plan has the same flaw, which is why I recommend software that does incremental.

Mirror is not a backup. RAID is not a backup. Incremental, offsite backups are backups.
