Best value 1.4x TC compatible with 7DM2 and 100-400 II

I have just pulled the triggered on 100-400 II (refurb from Canon).
I will use it mainly with 7DM2 (and also possibly with 5DM3).
Which is the best bang for buck quality 1.4x TC that will go perfectly with this combination?
Appreciate your help.

I use a Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 DGX AF 1.4x on my 40D and 5DIII with my telezooms. $130 at B&H. Works swell

There are some blue dot and some other dot versions with different compatibility.
I have Kenko Pro 300 DG bought a few years ago. I tried to use it with 7DC and 400mm f/5.6 prime and the focus used to rattle. I have kept that TC away since with afear that it might damage the electronic either in the body or the lens.
Hence I am being careful this time. May be I should try the TC on this combo now. Things might improve.. (i.e no focus rattle)

Hmm. The only dots mine has are the red ones for lining up the attachment to camera and lens. I've used my TC with an EF 70-200 f/4L IS, EF 100 f/2.8L IS, and Tamron 150-600. Haven't had any issues. I can't imagine why it wouldn't work with the 100-400 II.

Oh mann..you already have the best setup, why would you settle for less? Get Canon 1.4 III, it's just perfect combo with great IQ and fast AF. You can get less than 300 for that and trust me you will be happy with that combo

Canon EF 1.4x III. Getting a $1800 body and $2200 lens with stellar IQ ,and connecting them with a $130 third-party TC is face-palm territory IMHO.

Yeah, I'd agree with that, too, if I was buying a 100-400II for myself. Sounded like you were looking to save a few bucks is why I mentioned the Kenko.

I've been looking at 1.4x TX version II vs III for a few years. Online tests suggest there was very little improvement in the 1.4-III over the -II. Sounds like the big improvement is with the focus speed with the latest super tele lenses (300 f/2.8, 400 f/2.8 etc). The version II sells used for about $150 and the version III is about $300.

Is it worth spending 2x the money to get the smallest of improvements?

I haven't used both so I don't know. I don't have any of the super zooms so my TC 1.4x II is gonna stick around. It isn't the weakest link in my chain.

Best value? Get the EF 1.4x II.

If you still have lots of money after buying a 5D3, 7D2, and 100-400 II, get the EF 1.4x III.

There's a possibility that the new 100-400 will have a similar AF benefit with the MkIII TC vs the the MkII.

Anything less than Canon 1.4X III would be like buying expensive armani suit and buying the shoes from Payless store from sale section.

Well I just got a vIII for my 400 DO and tested it against the vI. Now I can't say this will be true for all lenses, but the only difference I could see was the CA. Sharpness was identical in the center and as close as I could tell with the extra CA of the v1 on the corners. I think vII is optically the same as v1.

I'll keep the vIII, just because I spent $7k on the lens, but I'm not getting a lot more for my $425.

I think the 2xTC's had more improvement with the different versions.

I own that same Kenko Pro 300 DG, and it works fine with the 7D2 + 100-400L II. The results are quite good. I did upgrade to the Canon 1.4x TC III, though, and find it to be slightly sharper. However, the Kenko holds its own at a much less expensive price point.

Here's a shot with the Kenko on my 5D3 + 100-400L II. All of my saved shots with the 7D2, unfortunately, are with the Canon TC.
