I caught this look today but she is actually cooperative and I try not to torture her, so don't worry :D

I'll be able to get a better lens for portraits over the holidays, but in the meantime I'm still shooting with the Tamron 70-300.

She looks pretty good. I'm not sure why you want a "better" lens? F/4 looks about right to me for that shot.

The Tamron seems to need tons of light to work well, and while it generally produces crisper images than my kit lens I struggle with the range because if I want to get a full body image of her in close quarters like her room, I have to switch to the 18-55 and by then I've missed the shot. It also has a slow auto focus which means a low "keeper" rate for my ninja toddler.

I was looking at this one. It's got great reviews and seems to bridge that gap I'm missing between the end of the 55 and the beginning of the 70, plus versatility of the lower end for the occasional landscapes.

If I were you, I'd still consider the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 lens. It's only about $20 more than the one above and it has a constant f/2.8 while the one above is variable from f/2.8 - f/4. I have no lens that covers the range from 55 - 70mm and have never felt like I had a gap in my lens coverage.

Canon 7D, 5D, 35L, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, 135L, 200L, 10-22, 17-55, 70-300, 100-400L, 500D, 580EX(2).
Sigma 150 macro, 1.4X, 2X, Quantaray 2X, Kenko closeup tubes, Yongnuo YN685(3), Yongnuo YN-622C-TX. Lots of studio stuff.

I like this more than the previous ones I have seen - the eyes are nice and clear. Well done.

I agree, much improvement from previous posts!

One consideration as far as your lens selection goes, if you're going to be sticking with photography...you may want to consider a purchase that can grow with you (should you move to a full frame camera in the future). Some lenses are designed only for crop sensor cameras, the rest can work on both.

Nikon is supposed to be getting the yongnuo 50mm 1.8 soon. If it's anything like the canon version that's been reviewed, it's supposed to perform just as well as the brand name "nifty fifty" for $50...a very modest price for what you get. Many people suggest the nifty fifty as one of the first "non-kit" lenses to get...

Your white balance jumps over in your images. This one has too much magenta in it, for example. Do you use LR in your post?

No I don't have LR. I have what came on my Mac computer whatever it is. I was thinking it's a tiny room (8×10) and the walls are purple, so it must be going onto her.
