I am looking into buying some gels to use for my bare bulb flash. I can get a pack of Lee gels for $30 that includes different CTO variations. My other option is to buy a large sheet of 1/2 CTO gel for about $6.

My question is regarding light loss with the gels. I am aware that gels can eat up some of the flash's power, but I am curious, would I lose more light if I were to stack two 1/2 CTO (or even four 1/4 CTO gels) gels instead of using a single full CTO gel?

The difference in transmission is negligible. Remember one stop is 50%, so 3-4% isn't going to matter much.

You should be conscious of mired shift, though. In the world of color temperature, 1/2 + 1/2 doesn't always equal 1.

I was not aware of "mired shift". After some reading, I decided it was best to just spend the extra for the assorted CTO gels instead of stacking them from a single sheet. Thank you for bringing this to my attention :).
