I recently got my hands on three 600 RT speedlights. I'm using them with a 5D mark ii. The problem is, I can get all three to fire via radio when one is on the camera but if I try to use all three off camera and use a remote trigger or sync cord, they say they're linked but the slaves won't fire. Im using a cowboy studios npt-04. So my question is, how can I get all three flashes to fire off-camera?

get 3 YN622Cs and a YN622c-TX. With the TX you can control the power of each speedlight and shoot HSS and TTL too.

Assuming you're talking about the Canon 600EX-RT -- you would need a Canon - ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter to use all three off camera. OR you would need three compatible Cowboy Studio receivers to attach to each of the flash units plus a transmitter on your camera. What it sounds like you're trying to do is trigger one flash with the CS trigger and have it then send a Canon radio signal to the other two units. I don't think that will work.

You already have a built in Wireless radio system in the 600EX-RT so use it. With the 5DmII buy a Yongnuo YN-E3-RT transmitter. With the YN-E3-RT you can use the Wireless <Gr> mode plus you will also have Wireless rear curtain sync but with the Canon ST-E3-RT Wireless <Gr> mode is unusable and no rear curtain sync capability and three times the price. The YN-E3-RT will communicate directly with the 600EX-RT's through Canons Wireless RT system. You will need to put the 600EX-RT's in Wireless Slave radio configuration as well as set all to the same channel and same 4 digit ID code. If you do not follow all three steps then you will not get the Master to communicate with the Slaves. This is probably the issue you are having in getting your three 600EX-RT's to work wirelessly with one as a Master and the other two as Slaves.

What's the purpose of buying triggers for a system that has built in triggers?

It'd make more sense to buy the yne3-rt...don'tcha think?
