Think the male must have told his girlfriend about the free food because I found a female the next day in the kitchen. I took the opportunity to do a comparison of my normal canon 5dmk2/MPE-65/ 430Ex flash rig against my SonyA7/ metabones adapter/MPE-65/ Nissin DI700A flash rig. Both using RAW shots. I'm actually surprised how similar the shots turned out especially bearing in mind different processing software.

You can tell the difference in their sex...and I thought that I was anal retentive. :-P

surprised how similar the shots turned out especially bearing in mind different processing software.

Aah, why different PP software?
Regardless...they are great shots!

It's not that bad- the males have the feather like antennae, the females don't.
WRT to the comparison - I was shooting RAW so used canon DPP for the canon RAWS and Capture One express for Sony for the sony ones.

Very difficult to draw any conclusions, I'm seeing a different "angle of attack", the majority of the 5D's DOF is on its legs and you nailed the A7 on the Midges body.

Of course what we want to see is a dark background or subject and a comparison showing how much detail you can pull from the respective shadows and tease from the highlights.

I like these.
You used the bare (no optical table setup) MPE-65 for them & I'm wondering if the working distance give you problems getting the light on the subject?

Great work!

Thanks for the comments :)

Snowy - agreed - difficult to draw any conclusions, the only practical thing I've noticed with the sony is I have less occurrence of blown colour (reds and yellows) in the RAWs than I get with the canon but again this may be processing differences. I certainly have not seen any negatives with the sony and it has many handling positives compared to the canon (ie the EVF).

PG - I was handholding for these shots using flash. pic of the rig below.

Thanks for the rig shot. Tight conditions! If I get a macro lens, I suspect that I'll try the 100mm first.

Both are nice pics but its interesting to see the difference in where each of the set ups get the finer detail showing - there is certainly a difference, one is no better than the other I don't think.

Linda

PS. Did you post somewhere about your having a Sony? If not, or if I missed it, what made you start using one? Just curious.

Great work Brian, but you are making it more difficult to keep up with the Jones :)

My 5Dmk2 is likely to fall to pieces soon I think (160K shots) so I'd been looking for a replacement and that offer came along.

Ah thanks for the link. Will have a proper read later but on a quick skim through, I see where you are coming from. Still surprised you went for a Sony though lol. (Bet you get another Canon in a while lol)

Different vehicles to get to the same destination?
Brian, these are amazing shot's, especially considering they are hand held.
Ditto on what Frank said, thanks for the equipment shot.

The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.
