Being a wayward Aperture user, I've been on the hunt for many months searching for the piece of software that would eventually replace Aperture. I settled on Capture One Pro and have been waiting for a cheaper price than the usual 10% discount codes you can get from various bloggers, etc.

As of Wednesday evening, B&H has discounted Capture One Pro 8 by 20% and you can get it for $239.20 up until Sunday evening at 11:59pm. I've been watching prices on Capture One Pro for a very long time and past history shows that you won't find a deeper discount until they are within 3 months (give or take) of releasing the next version. At that time, it's not uncommon to find a 50% discount. They seem to upgrade every two years, so if that holds, we won't see a new version until Sept of 2016. (Please note, this is my best guess.) For major upgrades, they usually charge $99 for an upgrade.

At any rate, $239.20 is a great price if you're in the market for Capture One Pro!

My plan is to pair Capture One Pro with Photo Mechanic. Rumor on the street is that Camera Bits will put Photo Mechanic on sale on either November 30th or December 4th, but that is the subject for another thread and I'll create one if/when Photo Mechanic goes on sale!

Cheers,
Bryan

Do note that PhotoMechanic does not reflect the edits you've made with CaptureOne. This is a major hassle that neither CameraBits nor PhaseOne seem to care a whit about. PhotoMechanic plays nicer with LR but even then you have to create a JPG to reflect the edits: still a hassle.

I use PhotoMechanic for ingesting and overall DAM. Once I have generated TIFF files with CaptureOne all the edits are visible in PhotoMechanic and I can use the application to write the metadata. The keywording features in PhotoMechanic are superb and CaptureOne has the best RAW engine available: one reason I keep using the combo even with the hurdles.

Wow, thank you for the feedback. I really appreciate it! I'll have to look into this a lot more closely early next week. Will research and get back to you if I have any questions.

Thanks again for the heads-up!
Bryan

Prices might go down when a newest version is about to be released. The amount the developer loses on the discounted price is recouped (with a little extra) when the buyer purchases the new release at upgrade price.

I don't think PhaseOne means version 8 to be their final release ever. But how long till the new version is out is known only to the developers. It might be days or months.

I activated my license this evening. If Capture One Pro 9 is announced, I hope I can upgrade for free since I got it less than 24 hours prior to the announcement!

PhaseOne has never provided free upgrades for 'integer-numbered' versions. When version 8 was released, I had to pay $99 to upgrade to it from version 7 (I actually paid 10% less, since one of the forum members here, Zerimar, provided those who were interested a discount code). I take it it'd be the same when version 9 is released.

The upgrades that are free are those numbered with decimals, since they're minor changes and/or bug fixes.

I know about the paid-upgrade on the major updates. Just hoping there's a grace period (for example, 7 days or 14 days) for those that just purchased it. Companies certainly don't have to do that, but it is a nice gesture and good for company relations when they do.

Cheers,
Bryan

I remember that after paying for the upgrade, days later, I attended a PhaseOne event and they had a draw for about 5 or 10 free downloads, either full version or upgrade, and there were so few of us that I probably would have walked away with one. Talk about a grrrr moment. :-x :p

I just read the press release when COP 8 was released and there was a 30-day grace period/free upgrade provided for those that had just purchased the software.

Bryan, you should be good to go. Grace period from Oct 30:

Looks like you got yourself a great deal.

I was actually looking at CO8 earlier last week wondering if there were going to be any discounts for BF. I found the B&H price but then thought maybe that was normal price at B&H.

I downloaded CO8 just yesterday as a trial. A little bit of a learning curve there from Lightroom but definitely a more interesting interface especially color grading.

50% regret not buying this. 50% don't think I need this yet. :)

And for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get CO to import specific list of photos (culled) from Photo Mechanic.

PM - > Lightroom was simply a drag and drop.
