I have been using a Canon T3i exclusively for wildlife video. I have been happy with the image results but I would like to upgrade for only one reason: full support of an external HD monitor.

What I mean is that the T3i can utilize an HD monitor via the mini HDMI port, however it does not display the proper ratio and cuts off the image around the edges. The biggest problem is that I cannot use the LCD screen at the same time when I am recording, it will turn off and only display on my monitor, and it has a lag time of a few seconds while switching.

So my question is: what is the very next step up that is capable of utilizing an HD monitor that will allow me to use both the LCD and the monitor at the same time while recording, and hopefully not cropping the image on the monitor? I am looking for a budget body (T4i, T5i, etc.)

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks.

I just saw a video with someone using a t4i (same as t5i) and it disables the lcd on the camera as well. But it does output 1080i to the monitor. I read even the 7d does the same thing. Maybe magic lantern can solve that issue? I'm not sure but I think most canon cameras might be doing the same thing as disabling the on camera lcd. Hopefully someone who shoots a lot of video will know.

Why not use EOS Utility and remote camera operation?

Thanks Ray. I was originally looking at the Panasonic GH3 or GH4 for this reason but I am trying to avoid this so I don't have to purchase the adapter seeing as I have 6 Canon lenses and counting.

I would try emailing or calling Canon and asking if they have any dslr's that can do this.

Because I don't want to have a laptop with me out in the woods and I don't need remote features :)

Maybe I'm missing something, but do you carry an HD monitor with you in the woods?

This is for video. I have a camera rig with the monitor attached. I just need monitor viewing cababiliities, why would I want to carry a laptop with me and go through that hastle?

/thread

Talked to Canon. The only model currently able to do this is the 5D III, according to them. Oh well.

Thank you everyone.

I wasn't implying that you should have to endure any hastle(sic), I just wasn't aware of your situation. Hope you find an answer.:-)

Yes. My monitor is powered by the same batteries as my camera which means I can bring plenty of extras with me out on my hikes. I do not want to deal with tablets or laptops, or apps or usb connections. I've had to many issues with this kind of setup incuding battery drain on the tablet/phone, having to rig a mount for the tablet/phone, disconnection/communication issues and lagtime. I don't know how else I can make myself clear on this.

This was resolved so please no more replies unless you have info obtaining to the use of an external monitor (that is not a tablet or computer), an actual field monitor is all I am interested in.

Thanks.
