There was a killer deal on Gitzo legs yesterday... think it's sold out now though.
Take a look though...

That's a good price - and seems to be in stock. Maybe interesting for OP.

Thanks but no. I'm looking for a lighter one suitable for a gripped DSLR and moderate lenses, say up to 70-200mm

Try the Vanguard series of tripods numerous retailers seem to running specials with ball heads. BTW, I have no problem with the 100-400L with a gripped 5DMIII.

B&H has some of the Sirui N series tripods on sale, of course without knowing your budget it's kinda useless to even point out.

Willing to spend to up to $400-500 total for a tripod and ball head. I took a loot last night and a lot of them are advertising 25-30 pound capacities. I don't need half that. Isn't it possible to spend money where you don't need to on a tripod/head?

I have an old, beat up Manfrotto 055v and 701rc2 fluid head. The tripod is more beat up than the head. It would be nice if the head could temporarily replace the ballhead when I'm doing video or viewing wildilfe through my spotting scope.

You'll want a tripod that can accommodate twice your cameras weight. You don't want to be maxing out, or near maxing out, your tripod. If you have a budget of 400-500 total then I'd recommend looking at something like an Induro or Sirui aluminum tripod. You could get an Induro AT 214 for $150 and a Sirui K-20 for $130. For $280 you'd have a solid, reliable tripod/ballhead setup.

Heya,

No real deals on good legs that I've seen.

However, you could use your budget and go for an end-game mount setup.

Here's a really good travel oriented tripod & head that can hold serious weight and is light weight itself (and can easily handle more weight even if you added serious super zooms to your kit):

Benro GC157F (external link) (Carbon Fiber, has 90 degree horizontal limb ability, etc)
Sirui K30x (external link) (Holds everything, end game)

$441.

Very best,

Good to know, thanks. My current (aging, dying) setup is beastly heavy. I spent some time climbing 1,000' in elevation and back down again and could definitely feel its weight along with the other gear.

My word that was a low price on that Gitzo! Methinks a new model must be around the corner?

Cannot comment on the legs but do yourself a favor and look at Sirui K20 or K30 ballheads. The price is the same or less than that Manfrotto and they are excellent heads.
