Willing to spend to up to $400-500 total for a tripod and ball head. I took a loot last night and a lot of them are advertising 25-30 pound capacities. I don't need half that. Isn't it possible to spend money where you don't need to on a tripod/head?

I have an old, beat up Manfrotto 055v and 701rc2 fluid head. The tripod is more beat up than the head. It would be nice if the head could temporarily replace the ballhead when I'm doing video or viewing wildilfe through my spotting scope. You'll want a tripod that can accommodate twice your cameras weight. You don't want to be maxing out, or near maxing out, your tripod. If you have a budget of 400-500 total then I'd recommend looking at something like an Induro or Sirui aluminum tripod. You could get an Induro AT 214 for $150 and a Sirui K-20 for $130. For $280 you'd have a solid, reliable tripod/ballhead setup. VanillaImaging.com

Good to know, thanks. My current (aging, dying) setup is beastly heavy. I spent some time climbing 1,000' in elevation and back down again and could definitely feel its weight along with the other gear.

The price is the same or less than that Manfrotto and they are excellent heads. Getting better at this - Fuji X-t5 & X-t3 - 16 1.4 - 35/50/90 f2 - 50-140 - flickr
