Speed Pro S or Speed Pro MK II?

I currently have a speed pro S bracket for my 360 light, but want to use a 47" octabox on it. Online, Edward says that he does not recommend anything above 40" on the Speed Pro S bracket. But then in one of the videos he says the main reason for suggesting the MKII over the Speed Pro S is the ability to hold it to the bracket when it is boomed upside down.

Have any of you used larger modifiers with the Pro S bracket? I am not seeing anything between the two that would make me think the MKII would be much different for larger modifiers. The only thing I could think of is the fact the Pro S is mainly made of plastic, although it is a very strong plastic.

I would like to avoid having to buy another bracket right now (already spent a bunch on the light, stand, modifiers, etc.). So I am just trying to figure out if I really need to or not.

Thank you in advance for any input you may have!

This may not answer your question definitively, but it might help. Take a look at my question about mounting the CheetahStand Ricebowl modifiers, which are rather large. Note the answer immediately below it:

That helps out a lot! Thank you :).

The Pro S bracket in my opinion are stronger and less likely to fail, when using larger modifiers, than is the Speed Pro MkII, whose speedring receptacle is attached to the bracket with just two very small screws. Any heavy modifier is always going to be putting bending and pulling force's on those two small screws no matter how you mount the bracket (upside down, right side up, or sideways). With the Pro S bracket you would literally have to break the plastic housing out, which could happen I guess, but I feel more confident in the plastic than I do in the two small screws breaking or stripping out. The Pro S brackets also take up a lot less room in the flash bag plus they are quicker to setup and they hold the flash more secure.

I noticed the two small screws as well and was not sure what I thought about that. Something about just having it attached at the bottom of the unit concerns me too. Size is also another huge thing for me since I do a lot of location shooting. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me about the brackets. I think I should be fine with just using the speed pro s :).

Previously I use the T bracket (same as speed pro), but lately I use the S bracket and so far it can hold the Elinchrom 150cm Octabox and Rime Lite 180cm huge parabolic grand box just fine.
I dont know if it can handle it forever without breaking :) time will tell. But so far its doing ok.

The T bracket advantage is that you can angle it down more, but the S bracket maximum angle is enough for me. You can use boom arm if needed.

Perfect! Thank you for sharing your experience nixland! Sounds like I should not have a problem at all with a 47" octa :).
