There are four (4) types of box turtles found in Florida These are photos of the Florida Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina bauri) a subspecies of the Eastern Box Turtle. The Florida box turtle is quite different in appearance from the other subspecies of Terrapene carolina. Its carapace has a distinct pattern of bright radiating yellow stripes that make it easily identifiable. It is found in the peninsula of Florida and the Florida Keys.

The other three Box Turtles are.......1) Terrapene carolina carolina (LINNAEUS 1758), Eastern Box Turtle, found in North Florida 2) Terrapene carolina major (AGASSIZ 1857), Gulf Coast Box Turtle, found in the panhandle of Florida westward 3) Terrapene carolina triunguis (AGASSIZ 1857), Three-toed Box Turtle, found in North Florida westward through the panhandle.

Thanks Ronnie. I am assuming that you wanted to say that you had these turtles near the pond because they are land turtles and don't live in the water. They do go to ponds to drink water however......

Nice. I have found one or two of these in my swimming pool over the last 15 years. They are lucky I found them and rescued them!! Box turtles are wonderful creatures.
