Canon 5DS/5DS R, have they bottomed out

C'mom...somebody out there must have a crystal ball...have the prices bottomed out?

I've been following the prices very, very closely for over a month now. If you're referring to the Grey Market prices on eBay, then yes, I suspect they have bottomed out. (Or are at least very close to the bottom.)

Via eBay, 6ave (6th Ave) has the Canon 5DsR for $2,923 but people have had some problems with 6ave in the past, so I was very hesitant to purchase one through them. GetIt Digital has the Canon 5DsR listed back at $2,999 and they have a better reputation/feedback history, so I purchased a 5DsR from them in the middle of the night between Friday and Saturday. I'm stoked to be picking up this beast of a camera and I can't wait for it to arrive in a week or so!

CanonPriceWatch has been an excellent resource for following prices and receiving fast automated alerts when prices fall below a threshold that you manually set with their price notification feature. I've also been checking eBay manually about 10-12 times a day for the last week. We haven't seen the prices drop much below their all-time low and my own personal hunch is they have nearly sold their current stock of grey market bodies and I have a feeling that if Canon's current lawsuit is successful, then we won't be seeing as many eBay grey market camera bodies as have been recently. Of course, with this being said, grey market dealers have always found a way to get around things, so the lawsuit may slow them down for a little while, but I'm sure they will resurface again at some point in the future. I also think the most important factor is the US Dollar, which is very high right now (as compared to the last several years). This higher the strength, the more attractive it is for importers to bring grey market cameras into the US. Who knows where currency rates will go, but it's hard to see the US Dollar gaining significantly more, and if that's the case, then I'm pretty sure we are near the bottom, for now.

I can totally appreciate those that are not comfortable with buying a grey market camera body. In that case, in my opinion, the current Street Price via CanonPriceWatch is an amazing bargain at $2,949 for the 5Ds and $3,249 for the 5DsR. For the next couple of months, it's hard to see the price going much lower. Going through CPW is your best bet.

getitdigital on eBay just dropped the 5DSR another $50. Now sitting at $2949.99

I just saw that a few minutes ago! Darn it. I just bought it for $2,999 about 38 hours ago. Oh well, it's always a guessing game and I can't really complain. After eBay Bucks and my 2% credit card rebate, I'm only paying $2,879 for a Canon 5DsR which is an amazing deal! (assuming it arrives with everything it's supposed to and has no issues...always a concern when ordering a grey market camera body)

After 4.5yrs of alot of buying/selling this is my opinion. Look at price levels in increments of 6 months. Release date holds strong value with little price drops and then roughly 6 months later the used/grey market hits and you see an initial 10-15% drop. I'd almost be as bold as 8-10% off every 6 months on bodies. Lets look at the 5D3... released 3/12 to public market (i know they didn't hit the street till a month or so later)

Looking at 8% drop every 6 months it's pretty darn accurate to what the market is showing. I bought my 5D3 Feb/14 for 2500.

anyway... prices are bottomed out every 6 months.... expect drops that soon. around 8%-10% or so. Falls in line. The 5Ds has hit a bit higher than 8% since it's Feb

Bottom out doesn't really set in till the product hits 10yrs old... look at the 5D for example... it's maintained ~350-500 for a used one now for the past couple years and the 5D2 has settled in the 800-850 range.

I think give it 3 more years and the 5Dc will be 300, 5D2 will be 500-600 and the 5D3 will be 1000 while the 5D4 will be in the 2k range (if released in 16' of course)

Heck even glass prices have dropped a bunch over the past few years.... things are turning weird. Glass use to hold value better and now heh... they coming' down a bit.

Yea...I've noticed the same thing with Canon glass. My thoughts are that the lack of new camera bodies from Canon, and Sony providing an interesting alternative with the A7 series, has demand for Canon glass down some from past years. I of course could be wrong...but when I see used Sony FE glass selling on FM for close to retail within hours of being posted on a normal basis, you have to wonder. Sure, supply/demand could be partially affecting the Sony lens prices, but I'd still call them a contributing factor.

Well sony sure hasn't messed up Canon's new pricing lately... which is higher and higher after each release. Of course this could be why Sony may be doing better and better lol

I agree that supply/demand does effect things, but I think the strengthening US Dollar has been the major contributing factor as to why we've seen the gradual drop in lens prices over the last 2 years. Canon USA is forced to offer rebates and lower prices as grey market sales start to cut into their sales.

glass prices continually to fall at a fast rate, which is surprising. The 70-200ii and 24-70ii both seem to take nose dives in regards to price. Hell, even the nikon 14-24 has been tanking at a great rate. I grabbed the 100 f2 for 265 fhs, that's an absurd price for that quality of glass.

I can say that at this point, I'm near completion of glass , still trying to trim down my setup, have a bunch of leftover money from selling stuff

I'm in the reverse process at this point, downsizing my gear........ before upsizing later

actually, my next purchase, I would like another body if possible. Going to wait for prices to drop a bit, since I do have another older body as is.
