Do you usually ask your clients how they want their images processed?

I am wondering if you guys give your clients options of how images will be processed. If so, how do you do that? Do you send unedited proofs with samples of processing?

As background, I was asked by an accomplished photog to take their wedding photos--which I did, I am happy with the images but have yet to start the processing. Normally I process as I see fit, but with them, I feel that I should ask.

No. They hire me based on my portfolio and samples. That's what I'm going to give them. Asking a client to provide too much feedback about details is opening the door to an unreasonable amount of client involvement. I might ask some general questions about preferences early on but too much opens the door to the sort of nitpicking you get when the client has power but no knowledge to back it up.

the only input I entertain as far as processing goes with wedding clients is if they request b/w of any of the images.

The only choice I ever offer is for female portraits...
whether 'soft focus' is desirable or not,
whether skin blemishes are retouched out or not

Some other 'special' techniques are sometimes offered as well, like sepia or other toning, or single selective color, when I feel a particular shot could benefit from the technique as an alternative presentation.

No, that's my job.
As I supply images for print or web reproduction, I just ask what size they want. I know the rest.

No. Asking a client how I should process the image would be like stopping them mid vows and asking then what angle I should take the shots from.

No, they select me as the photographers cause they want my style of edit.

also, why ask if u are not a photoshop guru? if u ask them and they say they want the style that is like so and so which u cannot make it happen, then why ask?

Thanks. I don't usually ask but this time it is photos for an another photographer. I know the general rule but as a photog, I think i would like to be able to give some input if the shoe were on the other foot as well. In either case, I asked and what she wants isnt too difficult

I only shoot part-time, but here's what I do.

For senior portraits, I'll have them give me some input prior to shooting if they have any particular type of photos in mind. We're already talking about wardrobe and location, so it's a whole "what's your style?" kind of thing for me to get to know them and what they're looking for. Once the shoot is done, I'll tweak my editing to what fits their style, but I'm not giving them images and asking how they'd like me to process them afterward. If they ask for something special, I'll try to accommodate it, but I try to get any requests like that out of the way beforehand so I'm not going back and wasting time re-editing images.

My only real exception to this is for weddings where someone wants a particular shot in black and white. I'll go back and run a few shots through Silver EFex Pro, since that's fast and easy.

Nope.

They book you because of your style and artistic vision, not because you're simply someone who has a camera and can take pictures.

And I charge a premium for customized processing.

No way at all. they are buying you as much as they are buying wedding photographs. You and your style is the reason they hire you

No. If they want me to shoot like someone else's style, i'll tell them to hire that person instead.

When searching for a photographer, I searched for one who I liked his photos, didn't expect him to change styles to meet my expectations.
I think that there can be some leeway in case a customer wants something specific, but I think that would be the exception and not the rule. Maybe if the customer wants some very specific photos they can talk of them with you, but other than that I think you should keep your style.

No. Shoot and edit the way you like. They should choose you based on this.
