I Built a ring light over the weekend here is a shot I took with it. Very minor editing. Warmed it up just a touch. Thoughts and comments?
I am mainly into wildlife photography but with the winter season ramping up I thought it would be a great time to try something different and spend the cold season working with lighting and portraiture.

Well you got the ring light catch lights, sort of. The series of spots don't quite work for me. I'd like to see a wider shot to see if the ring light shadow effect.

I will have to work on that. Do you have any examples as to what I should be aiming for when using this type of lighting? Is it best to not have the ring as a catch light or should I add diffusion to make it a complete ring? Thanks for the input. This shot had minimal cropping. Was shot with a 7D markII and 100mmL macro.

The catchlight is a matter of personal taste. The shadow is a slight halo around the subject,. If you google image search youll see lots of examples.

So basically flat lighting in the center of the image falling to light shadow as you move outward? I have looked at quite a few shot on google but missed the shadow cause I was always drawn to the eyes. I will look some more now that you have pointed it out to me.

Here is my build/prototype. Being new to using a ring light I wanted to keep it simple and yet keep the door open for improvements as I learn how to use this form of creative lighting. I was and still am not sure if I like the catch light it produces with the individual lights so next thing will be to add diffusion panel of some kind to make the ring continuous and or maybe a higher watt bulbs.
Also, in the photo four lights were missing due to the lack of being able to count when I picked up my supplies :) The shot above is with all 12 lights. 40 watt LED.

This is a learn as I go type of light and am looking forward to any comments/input from experienced users of ring lights or anyone else with lighting experience. I have spent hours on u-tube and the web which is how I got to the point where I am at with this light. All of my photography knowledge thus far was also obtained using the power of the web.

Once again thanks for all or any comments. This forum is a wealth of knowledge some good and some bad but thats with anything.

Cool

Heres the one I built. Its probably quite a bit heavyer then yours. I was pretty much making it up as I went along also

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1444941

Mine has the same "not to everyone's taste" catch lights also. Im not totally put off by it but when things slow down in the winter I might look into making a defuser so it makes the actual ring.

What type of catch light do you prefer when using a ring light?

I was looking at building it like you did but also was looking for a way to keep the weight down. So tis the season and decided to use a wreath wire frame :)

Ya I'm on the fence as to wether I like the individual dots. I am brainstorming on how to add diffusion without loosing to many stops of light. Not sure what material choice would be best
