We took a little fall trip to a farm in October and I am just now going through the photos and found this little beauty. We were there to get pumpkins, so not a planned photo-shoot. I happened to see some Lavender plants and called my daughter over for a few shots, not realizing that she had, by coincidence, dressed in those colors! I just love the results of this candid pose.

That may be, but her clothes are awfully clean to match that running around:-P

Thanks so much, everyone. I will probably leave the boot true to the situation, since this is a candid and that's exactly what she's done -- worn those boots out! :)

Great shot, Kristen.

I'm just starting to branch out from my normal landscape images and into portraits. I took a look at your website and I must say, WOW! very nice.

Now if I could only find models to practice on...:roll eyes:
(Asking my wife and daughter I may as well ask if they want a tooth pulled :-D )

Any tips for the aspiring portrait photog?? :-)

Fantastic shots. It's shots like these that really tempt me to get a 135L. It seems like such an amazing lens.

She must be quite an active young lady - I remember when our daughters were young...it was a challenge sometimes to keep up with them

Wow, that's hard to sum up in a short answer, but you are on the right track by posting here. POTN was an amazing resource when I first got started. Post here often for CC and develop a very thick skin! There are also a lot of CC groups on Facebook and other parts of the web. SO VITAL. Without CC from experienced photographers, you will have a hard time growing. Your friends and family are going to love everything you do. Also, practice every chance you get! Yes, it helps me a lot to have so many available models, but it's not hard to tempt friends with free photo-shoots. Follow good photographers and, if very impressed, look for their workshops or classes and don't forget the many FREE tutorials out there! (Start on You Tube.) :) Keep asking questions!

Yes, it's a great lens! But it has taken me some time to master. The bonuses are the focal length, quality, and speed. The drawbacks are no-AF on a long lens and watching that shutter speed! OY! Definitely worth a consideration if you don't have that focal length.

Yes -- she is at that age! I'm happy when I can get her (or any of my kids) to stop for a minute to get shots like this! :)

I followed that exact advice before I ever subjected anyone to my landscape photos. I actively sought out someone who was both knowledgeable and who didn't give a crap about hurting my feelings to critique my work. It helped immensely! It certainly pushed me to become a better photographer. And now there's this whole people/portrait thing to learn.

I actually feel I know quite bit about Off Camera Flash just from all of the tools you mentioned, such as YouTube. I tend to research things to death before I jump into them. It's the whole lack of willing models that's killing me. And they don't need to be "models" I need warm bodies with the patience of a saint who're willing to work with me.

Hopefully some people will be willing to help model in return for some portraits! That is what I've put out there in the past when I wanted more than just my own kids to practice on. Win-win for all. :)
