Anyone ever use the 120-300 for studio?

I'm gonna give it a try and see how it goes.... handheld of course :)

I haven't used it for studio work, per se. But I used it for portrait work in a classroom. I wanted to capture head shots of students we were interviewing while they were being interviewed, but I didn't want them focusing on me instead of the video camera/interviewer. With the 120-300, I was able to stay way back and still get great shots.

It'll focus to less than 5' away. at 120mm it'll focus to 51" by my measurement and that is only a couple inches longer than most of the 70-200s... at 300mm though you need a tad more room around 70" but not anything like the 150-600 class lenses.

i guess it depends on your intended subject...at less then 5 ft you're not going to be framing that much area.

Well no... I wouldn't shoot at 5'. I typically shoot around 12-15' away.

I use my 135/2 in my home studio on crop so I don't see why it would not do well other than your arms getting tired as the shoot goes on if you're not using a tripod.

I shoot in my garage studio with a 70-300 L on full frame. Occasionally mount the 24-70 for full body shots. I think I would miss the 70-119 range, and the 70-300 is about as heavy/large as I would like to use for an extended time. You don't need the fast aperture in the studio, so a 70-200 f/4 or 70-300 L are ideal for studio work on full frame. If you don't mind the weight/size and the MFD is adequate why not give it a try?

Yes You are correct. I'm just an advocate of pain lol.

The 70-200 F4 IS was THE perfect studio lens for me... super light and sharp as a tack. I still wish I never sold it each time I do studio stuff now. Of course I tend to stick to the 85 most.

Looking at your lenses, I would use the 70-200 f/2.8 or try the 70-300 VC on full frame. Another possibility, use the 24-70 VC on one of your crop bodies.

85 works perfect for most uses. Super light and omg sharp. The 70-200 F4 comes in second. The 2.8 is kinda hefty for shooting the kids. I loved using the F4.

We'll see... gonna set the studio stuff up for the first time in 6 months :( I've been bad....
