Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good template for planning a new photography business?

I've searched online and there's lots, but very confusing which is best.

Most are forms that you fill in online, and you can't see the form until you finish. No way to tell if they're good for my needs.

Others charge a fee. I'm not against paying, but I don't want to be trapped in paying for something that is useless for my purposes.

Anyone?

Thank you!

A business plan is the same regardless of the business you are getting into. If you search simply for business plan template you will find a large number of free ones and help in creating one. That said, here are some links to help

This one I HIGHLY Recommend - Since I used to be a Marketing Consultant with BDC (20 years ago).

http://www.bdc.ca …siness-plan-template.aspx (external link) - detailed template and examples

here are a couple others.

https://www.score.org …template-startup-business (external link) - simple word doc

http://www.bplans.com/sample_business_plans.php (external link) - samples for a number of businesses including one for photography

Just keep in mind a Business Plan needs to be a living document, designed to be followed and updated on a regular basis. As the market changes or things work or don't work in your plan you adjust your plans.

Also be REALISTIC and CONSERVATIVE in your plan creation.

Hope these help

Doug

Once you have completed your plan, have a look at what will happen if you only manage half the takings, for double the costs. If you have been reasonable in your business plan that is likely to be your worse case scenario. How long can you manage to keep that up? And what would the long term personal results be of it. At least that was some of the advice I got from our local enterprise advice service, who run courses in setting up your own business.
