Then there is the ever endearing "the wife unit".

Hijack time!

The ever-popular "ball and chain" comes to mind.

Or "trouble and strife" (Cockney rhyming slang).

I think you're only legally permitted to own one, so using a singular preposition is probably okay. Not my language choice, but it's also not my concern.

-? There are no prepositions in "the wife" or "my wife," and English doesn't have singular and plural forms for prepositions.

I won't even touch "own."

I was thinking of Arthur Daley, but guess the expression is a lot older...

[...] At least it emphasizes that the guy has just one wife.

I'm frequently puzzled by the Post your best wife shots thread.

I know, I'm the same, I only have one wife, so she is naturally my best, but equally that also makes her the ....... better not go there.

Maybe that thread is only meant for polygamists

Another forum on which I lurk, a language forum in fact, has one participant, a journalist/editor (though now emeritus), who always refers to his as 'my first wife'. He's only ever been married once but he reckons it keeps her on her toes :)

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

You should guard against letting them get complacent from the get-go. Introduce your fiancé as "my future, and potentially ex-, wife."

It helps ensure that they stay in that work-gym-kitchen-bedroom cycle.

You're definitely in touch with your masculine side, don't let the TF tell you otherwise. ;-)a
