That would depend on how much each one could potentially make at work, while I stay home and save my energy for group sex when they all get home.

Probably amounts to the square root of 1 then Moose!

We often see posts on POTN asking questions about a camera for "the wife"? Does anyone else but me find this somewhat sexist and/or demeaning? Did you ever see a posting referring to "the husband"?

One wants parts for "the car" or "the house" or maybe "the cat", but they are all "things" (well, maybe not the cat) but a wife is a person, so why not "my wife"?

Opinions please, ladies and gentlemen (which might even include some photographers);-)a

P.S. BTW I'm a man.

For the husband? You won't see that because the husband is the one working and buying things for the wife. The wife is doing her job in the kitchen and cleaning the house. Her simple mind can't handle the complexities of the cameras her husband uses. She needs a special camera just for her! :p

But seriously, I don't think it's sexist at all. If the husband (or wife) is asking that, it is because the OP IS the "other half" and is buying for their spouse. So, they say "husband" or "wife" or w/e. When I say I'm buying something for my wife, I don't stop and think "Oh, maybe I should just say 'spouse' so I don't sound sexist."
And the reason they are even mentioning that they are buying for their spouse is because their spouse has different needs than them, so they are separating themselves right off the bat to let you know. Otherwise, they would just say "I am buying a camera and these are my needs." It just might SOUND sexist because the spouse usually has a lesser understanding of photography than the OP. Maybe that's why the OP is on here and the spouse is not?

Anyway, I think we should stop trying to find sexism, or racism, or discrimination where it is not. Especially when that is clearly not the intention. Creating it out of nowhere just perpetuates it.

"The Hubby". I see this all the time. : /

I wish MY wife would come on here and ask about a camera for her hubby (ME!).
But she wouldn't because she doesn't know as much as I do about cameras. Which is exactly why I would be one to have a post that says "I am buying a camera for my wife." Not sexist, I am just more interested in photography than her, so I have the drive to learn more of it.

First, let me say, I detest this new age of PC and everyone is a winner... as most things go, it has swung to far the other way...

I do not believe it is as regional as some have stated, it is used here on the east coast of Canada as well. I have used it and now it's time for all the men to get a little bit more honest.

When you want to be loving or endearing, you use "My Wife". when trying to appear macho or do a little s*** disturbing, or when you know you're gonna be in the doghouse. it's "The Wife". I believe it is reminiscent of, " the ol' ball and chain.

Examples; You're at the bar having some beers with "The Boys" ( couldn't resist ) and you see it's getting late... Do you say, I'm going home to my wife or I've got to get home to the wife?

You're at a gallery opening with mixed company, some of whom your do not know your wife and your wife walks into the room, is it "Here's the Wife" or Here's My wife"?

Down at your buddies place instead of home fixing whatever is on your to do list and she comes walking up... Which do you sigh and say?

I certainly don't think that is meant as sexist or derogatory but neither is it especially endearing. On the flip side, I do not believe that My wife is being possessive... why is it not being proud?

Blake, the original question wasn't why people mention that they're choosing a camera for their wife (or husband or brother or child or friend). It's only about phrases: "the wife" versus "my wife."

I know. It is still completely relevant to the question. Context always plays a role in determining the intention. Your tone and attitude also apply, but it is difficult to accurately convey that online. WHY and HOW someone says a certain word or phrase makes a difference.
