Thanks all.....those shots are really lovely. The BG is clean and buttery.
Excellent points discussed....
.....btw 'The other difference, is I over-expose my subjects in this kind of light by over 1 and 1/3rd stops and bring it down in post. It makes a big difference. '.....is it (over-exposing the subjects) same the ETR or expose to the right.....??
Thanx again.....
Heya,
Yes, it's exposing to the right. But specific to the subject. I try not to blow out the background, which is why I specifically try to use a placement that has a darker background so I can't blow it out white (like the sky would have). This way I can over expose the subject (bird) without blowing any highlights. I just meter as normal, or use Live View and meter and look at the histogram, and I increase exposure however I want to, until I see blinking sections of blown highlights, or a big peak pushing past the right limit of the histogram, then I back it up a bit. Then I'm good to go and shoot without much change, if I'm in light that isn't changing much. Lacking those options, like with my 1D Mk II, I simply meter and increase exposure until I'm about 1.5 stops higher than what the meter called normal on the placement of where I expect to expose a bird and then after a photo, I simply look at the histogram to see if I have more room to expose farther to the right, and if I do, I do it.
Very best,
