Did some testing today due to discussion in a fb group. I tested my xplor 600 and my R2 Lion speedlight to compare power. Both at full power in a 7" reflector (flash zoomed at 200mm) and I get 2 stops more from the xplor. Just thought it was interesting.

Not understanding, isn't the R2 Lion a hot shoe flash? You can't compare flash head zoomed with a strobe IMHO. If that flash head will be in a modifier it will be at wider setting, say 14mm or so.

Fuji XT-1, 18-55mm
Sony A7rIV, , Tamron 28-200mm, Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art FE, Sony 85mm f1.8 FE, Sigma 105mm f1.4 Art FE
Fuji GFX50s, 23mm f4, 32-64mm, 45mm f2.8, 110mm f2, 120mm f4 macro
Canon 24mm TSE-II, 85mm f1.2 L II, 90mm TSE-II Macro, 300mm f2.8 IS I

I just ran the test per a request on the fb page I am in. Most of the technical aspects of these things make my head ache.

Edit: yes the R2 is a hotshoe flash

Why would that be interesting? You are comparing totally different things. The aD600 is by default much more powerfull. The V860 focus the beam for a long lens zoomed in. There could be more light on the lit area but the total lit area can't be equal size to the lit area by the AD600 without be humbled again.

Thanks. Just for info using zoom on the flash head concentrates flash in smaller area to reach more distance. This is opposite of what you really want. Just because flash was 2 stops lower than 600ws strobe doesn't prove anything about its power. In real life, you would probably need 7-8 flashes to match output of XPLOR600.

Speedlite zoomed to 200mm isn't relying on the reflector. Its also got the output of the speedlite focused into a very narrow cone of light. The 7" reflector on the 600 is approximately the same coverage as the speedlite at 35 to 50mm zoom.

About all the test establishes is that zooming a speedlite does concentrate the light into a narrow cone.

Really, I am sure there is a reflector in the speedlite that can be moved!!!

I was referring to the 7" reflector that was added.
The zooming function in the speedlite moves the flash tube in relation to a reflector and the fresnel lens to make the light cone narrower or wider. But that's not a 7" reflector.

This is what you wrote.

Update:
Ha, I now see a speedlite was put in a 7" reflector. Sorry my mind filtered out automatically that bit of information because that would be useless. -?

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean some photographers won't do it.

Well, I guess I kinda stepped in it and gave you all a bit to discuss regarding my ignorance. :) Happy to help. (Just like I was happy to pop a few lights for someone else). What they do with the info is up to them.

Thank you, Annie. I wasn't meaning to put myself down. The technic aspects are lost on me and it's ok. I know where to come when I have a question.:)
