Well shoot, now I'll have to buy a 500f4v1. With that and a 7d2, I might have to sell the wife's car!

If the lens exists and it's a non-L, I think this is super interesting even against Sigma and Tamron as good as they are.

Basically, being f/5.6 and using Canon native autofocus is a huge plus, especially if it's at least reasonable IQ at f/5.6. The Sigma and Tamron both are OK-ish at 600 f/5.6, but I didn't really like either until f/7.1 or f/8. Even if I have to stop the Canon down as much as I stop the Sigma and Tamron down, that's still maintaining a 1/3 stop light advantage which is necessary for the kinds of uses you would find for this lens - airshows, birds, sports, etc.

I think the best way for Canon to bring the price down would probably be to strip a lot of the weather sealing/tank build quality from the lens and make it more of a true prosumer/high end consumer lens.

If all of this is true, I think that the Canon would easily be worth $1,700 or whatever the street price falls to (probably like $1,400-$1,500) as opposed to a street price of around $850 for the Tamron and Sigma

Tamron both are OK-ish at 600 f/5.6 (should be at F 6.3 )

It all comes down to resolving power vs autofocus. If it's a 2000 mm lens that can only resolve to 1MP, or if it's a lens that can resolve to 50MP but has no autofocus it will have no worth no matter the price.

Just saw this.

We are received some more info about upcoming Canon’s new full frame super telephoto zoom lens: EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM lens. It is said this lens is already in testing by photographers around the world. The release date of this lens will be in late 2016, not previous rumored around Photokina 2016.

EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM Lens Price Around $1,700, to be Announced in August, 2016

If Sigma can produce a new 500 F4 with all the bells and whistles-Tamron can re-work their 150-600-Nikon can produce
a 200-500. Then surely -surely CANON can make this 200-600.....>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Impatiently waiting and waiting.

And BOOM...

Canon does need a slower 600mm super telephoto zoom lens in their lineup, although canon has lots of great lenses. The Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 sports lens ($1,999) and Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 lens ($999) are selling really well, and recently Tamron released the new 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 lens ($1,399), so I think Canon should unveil its own 600mm lens as soon as possible to compete against Sigma and Tamron.

According to the report from CanonRumors, the upcoming Canon EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS lens will be possibly announced along with Canon EOS 6D Mark II DSLR camera, which is rumored to be launched in the first half of 2017, probably at CP+ 2017 in February. This new Canon EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS will NOT be an “L” lens, and has no weather sealing but great optics and build quality. And this 600mm lens will cost about the same as the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II ($1,999).

And the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary is still $900 or less which you forgot to mention up there.. and it weighs less and optically is pretty darn good

Yeah my problem with the Canon IS the lack of sealing and such and the fact I feel its going to be priced up with the Sigma S which does.... the Canon would need to be optically head and shoulders above the rest

And with the new Tamron 150-600 G2 on the market---should make for interesting times.

I am willing to wait a while longer-then we will have quite a selection.

My patience is gone--went out and bought a Canon 500 F4 IS Mk1.

If the new zoom comes out I will wait and see how performance reviews see it and then decide further.
Moving on.

Congrats on the great lens! You will be happy with the results, of not with the pain in your back :)

Were you actually waiting for a rumor to materialize?
