Canon has been very responsive to what customers want. It just takes a while.

For example:

1. Customers demanded better wide angle glass from Canon. Canon delivered a ton of them: 16-35mm f4 IS, 16-35mm III, 11-24mm. Went from a lack of them to the best choices on the market.

2. People wanted more DR. Didn't go to first place but Canon responded and now they are only slightly behind the Sony sensors (good 'nough).

3. People wanted a mirrorless option. At first they were mediocre but now the M5/M6 are great if a bit too pricey for what they are. They'll probably continue to get better and better.

Another good example is the 5d3...people demanded better AF and whined and complained that the 5d2's AF sucked. Well, the 5d got basically the 1dx system.

Complain loudly enough, give feedback when you buy new cameras from Canon, etc, and they'll listen. Eventually. They have to.

Also Canon hasn't been pricing the new glass nearly as crazy as Nikon has.

I doubt we'll get an affordable 600mm 5.6 though. But I could see a 500mm 5.6 that is similar to the Nikon one.

A real lens is usually more functional than a mythical one.. usually. :)

If the canon proprietary special sauce is a 6 or 7 or 8 stop IS, this will make waves in the super telephoto market. Otherwise 4 stop IS and slightly sharper than a 150-600 sigma or tamron g2 , and no one will give a ****.

might as well be like the 35mmf2.8 lens with led lights for BIF shooting in the dark :-D

on a serious note, anything sharper or at least as sharp as the 200-500, at 600 f5.6, a better AF speed & with at least IS/VR like that one, would sell like hot cakes. Now it is up to them to come out with it, as I know they are capable of that.

Yeah.. the Sigma is already a fantastic lens..

The other option would be if Canon made one lighter weight or something than the Sigma/Tamron options.. but thats not physically possible

Maybe if they used DO elements but then we're getting in to expensive air again

DO (Fresnel actually) greatly reduces weight in lighthouse lenses and lenses for stage lighting. It also helps in photographic lenses when used for the large front element, but a side effect is reduced contrast. So Canon is moving the technology to smaller internal elements, and cementing mating Fresnel elements together to solve the flare problem. That works great, but does not help much if at all with the weight. Too bad, because a lightweight 200-600 f/5.6 would be wonderful. Maybe they could fill it with helium to reduce weight.

It doesn't help a huge amount but the 400 DO II is less than 90% of the weight of the 300 f/2.8 IS II. To my knowledge the 400 is half a generation older than the 300 II in terms of weight too which IMO further improves the weight saving from the Fresnel elements

The big white version II lenses are all lighter than the version I lenses, except for the 400 DO. That's because the front element is no longer DO. But "DO" is in the name, so users can imagine that it is light.
