Canon had better come out with this lens, or something similar, or they are going to continue to lose a huge number of lens sales to their competitors. . Sony and Nikon both have similar lenses for their bodies, and Sigma and Tamron have similar offerings to fit Canon bodies.

Canon often worries too much about competing with themselves, and thereby allows competitors to come in and fill niches that they refuse to fill themselves, for fear that a new product would "steal" sales away from an existing product. . Meanwhile tens of thousands of Canon customers have turned to Sigma and Tamron for their lens needs.

The insane success of the Sigma and Tamron 150-600mm lenses show that tons of people want this type of lens at this price point. . Yet Canon has refused to give people what they want. . That doesn't seem like good business to me. . Almost all of those dollars that went to Sigma and Tamron EF mount purchases would have gone to Canon if Canon would have offered a similar lens at a similar price point.

With Canon, if you want to go past 400mm you either use an extender, or spend over $6k.

Although I have a lot of Canon gear, I might try Sony, just for their 200-600 lens. But I'll rent first.

"Try Sony"? . That seems to imply that you don't already have a Sony and would buy one just to get above 600mm for less than $6K.

If you already have a Canon, and want to get above 400mm affordably, why would you move to a whole new system when you could just buy a Sigma or Tamron 150-600mm, or buy a used Canon 500mm IS v1 for about $2300?

There are LOTS of options available to Canon users who want to get to 500mm or 600mm for just $2K or $3K. . Why would you move to Sony instead of trying one of these options?

I am not disagreeing with what you say, but I want to understand the rationale behind it. . It's not like there aren't a lot of options within the EF mount ecosystem.

If Canon were to release one, I would assume that it would have the 100-400's super fast and accurate AF, amazing IS, and be "primelike" across the focal range.

I can see trying a different sytem for such a thing.

Nikon's 500mm fresnel f/5.6 would have pushed me to go Nikon if I was still shooting birds the way I did 15 years ago!

I think you meant, 150-600.... In any case, I stated the same in my Feb. 8, 2018 post. You waited a lot longer than me. :-P

I have the Tamron 150-600 version 1 (excellent results with my 5DIII) - but I would have grabbed the Canon in a heartbeat. I agree with Tom, Canon
lost a ton of money that went to other manufacturers.

They lost a lot more than $$$

They are loosing customers

The after market stuff is great. I bought a sigma 85 art instead of the Canon 85 1.4.

Sigma will force canon to drop prices...thats good for all of us
