When I was young around 13 my dad's friend actually owned one. He would let it out everyday to fly and he would have a whistle to blow and it would always come back (whistle=food). After a few years of owning it one day it never came back. They are pretty big close up in person.
I'm assuming he was a licensed falconer? Most falconers will trap a juvenile bird,train it, keep the bird over the winter and hunt with it, and release it the following spring/summer. Some will keep the bird for a few years, but usually release them if they are not captive bred or uncommon birds like Gyrfalcons, Lanner falcons, etc.
