Looking at a used IMac that a friend has. It's in perfect condition. These are the specs.

27" iMac (late 2012 model)

Quad-Core i5 2.9GHz
16GB RAM
1.1TB Apple Fusion SSD Drive
Nvidia 650M Graphics
OS X El Capitan 10.11.1
Keyboard and Magic Trackpad.

How would this machine work for photo editing with lightroom 6 and photoshop?

What are you using now? My iMac (with 8GB of RAM, haven't upgraded yet) fares well. If you aren't doing huge batches of edits, and you aren't manipulating massive images, I think you'll be fine.

You'll be good. I use a similar spec machine and often batch process 15-20 RAW files at a time in PS.

I've been using a cheap windows desktop that I got from Wal Mart about 7 years ago. The thing was slow as molasses and it finally died. Was thinking about a laptop but I really like the idea of a 27 inch screen.

The 27 inch is great to work on. If your friend is offering you a reasonable price I'd jump on it.

The 27" screen really is a nice idea. I found I still have a hard time getting used to such a big screen, but sure enjoy using it! :)

I'm still happy with my late 2012 iMac 27. The one you've mentioned has more ram and the fusion drive, so should be even better than mine. The screen is superb and the machine itself has operated flawlessly.
