I wish that I knew how to make these roses more artsy looking...suggestions?

This lighting doesn't seem to be working out.

Mad idea - project firelight on to the rose against a dark background :)

im not liking the light color either, plus its creating harsh shadows.

I'd shoot it under softer white light and them color it in post

When ya take a flower shot and that flower has passed on, the only option is to...change the PP.

I think this would look cooler as one of those selective color photos. That purple reflection coming off of the front leaf is really pulling my eyes towards it. Being said, I think your new grayscale photo is really nice!

If you are depending on post to make a blossom interesting, youve failed already.

I used to be asked to judge a local camera club's bi-monthly competitons. There were a couple of members who loved flowers and would shoot perfectly centered shots of blooms, generally well exposed but somewhat flatly lit. Totally boring after youve seen one. Not an ounce of creativity involved. Because they were prominent and dedicated members I had to try to be constructive but beyond nice exposure pretty flower there wasnt much to say. Thats your starting point and then you made it worse. I would attempt to be positive but having read some of your criticism of beginners here I'm not inclined.

I would submit that any descent photographer can take a pretty picture of a pretty subject...
turning a mundane subject into a pretty picture requires a whole different skillset.

I'd start with a better looking rose, that one is a bit past its sell by date....Also try a whiter light on it and then change colour slightly in pp..

A more attractive subject does tend to make it easier...
