I don't shoot much anymore and am planning on downgrading my setup, i just sold my 5DIII and want to get an A7, unforunately the A7S II is a bit out of my price range and the A7 II seems to fit my bill. I shoot a lot of landscapes and sport photography specifically mountain biking and car related, does anyone have any sample images of things like that? I can't find any and most forums all seem to say that the AF speed isn't very fast on this camera, please post any fast moving subject pictures, thanks!

I added 2 mirrorless bodies to my kit last year (one being the A7r) and I eventually decided against keeping them. The reasons were varied but where this post is concerned I'll cite the EVF lag first and the lack of a competent AF tracking system for action photography second. Also with the Sony there wasn't any significant weight savings because you still need big glass for the full frame sensor. Now, I'm definitely not attempting to instigate a mirrorless vs DSLR debate here. My point is to share how I came up with my best sports/action shots with those cameras within the limitations of the system. For stuff like car racing or where objects were going around a track in a predictable nature I got my best results by pre-focusing and hitting the shutter button at the appropriate time. For situations like team sports or playing dogs, etc. it was very, very tough and I actually got better results with the OM-D EM-1 than with the Sony. I'd hold the camera out at arm's length, follow the action and tap the LCD with my finger when I wanted to make a capture. It was not great compared to a DSLR but it was still workable. Hopefully my limited experience with the systems will be helpful in getting you up and running with the Sony. Best of luck.

Thanks for the input, I figured the AF speed wouldn't even come close to touching something like the 5D3, I may just buy another 5DIII and consider having the A7 for lighter on the go landscape shooting or something like that

the A7r had not shutter lag issues, and the AF is piss poor (virtually no tracking abilities), even with native lenses. The A7ii will run circles around the A7r, and the A7rii certainly does as well, even with adapted canon lenses. Both A7ii and A7rii dont have shutter lag issues (similar shutter lag to DSLR's). For predictive action like biking, I'm guessing it world work fine, erratic animals... not so much. Predictive stuff, I MF if needed, the focus peaking can work well on that sort of stuff.

I would be getting the A7 II since the A7R's biggest weaknesses seems to be action. I'm curious how a canon lens would change the AF since I have a 70-200 F4 IS, Ideally I'd like to have a 5DIII and an A7 but moneys an issue lol

Even the original a7 has better autofocus than the a7r (though not by much I've read) because the R only has contrast detection af where as the original a7 has both phase and contrast.

i watched a video on youtube not too long ago about the A7II focusing. I was looking at getting one for night shooting and long exposures. It seemed to work really well with the 70-200 IS II but that was the only lens he tested so im not sure how it would hold up to other lenses.

I was actually just considering getting a 7DII and an A7, but I feel like the 5D mark iii is so much better lol

the tracking with adapted lenses is extremely dependent on the lens. Fortunately for you, both 24-105 and 70-200f4is supposedly work well.

it wont track as good as native obviously, but you do gain face detection, which is really nice.

Horses for courses, the 7DII is superb for sports/wildlife, and does just fine as general purpose. The A7 has great image quality for landscapes, and can also do general purpose. I think that is a great combo, if you go for the A7II and do the firmware update to have better AF with third party lenses if you go that route. 5DIII is the best general purpose, but personally, I'd get the 7DII, (great deals out there) and sit and wait for what a 5DIII replacement will look like. I am waiting. I may jump to the 6DII if the AF is improved, I may go to the 5DIII if the price is worth those trade offs..... or I may have to get the next 5D(Iv?) if they improve it all out of proportion.. I keep wanting to go with an A7, but then I think about lenses, batteries, flashes, etc... and it isn't smart for me to have two systems for what I shoot.
