I recently installed the FREE program FastStone Image Viewer 5.5 and it has so far proved to be a very good addition to my image handling process.

FastStone has many features I like a lot; one of which is the fact that it will display my many RAW and PSD files, unlike Windows or Explorer or whatever it is called which only displays an icon for RAW and PSD files.

However, there is one minor annoyance that I can't seem to figure out how to fix; on about one of every five layered PSD files, FastStone will display a random layer instead of displaying the picture.

There is no rhyme or reason as to which layer it decides to associate with a particular PSD file and no trick I have tried will convince it to display the whole image; I have tried all three "refresh" buttons and a "reload" button that is found in the "FILE" menu.

I have even loaded some of the affected images in Elements and checked to be sure that all the layers are marked visible.

Does anyone know the cure for this ailment ?

Other than this one minor glitch, I am really impressed with the many features and abilities of this program; it is so good that it is hard to believe it is available to anyone for FREE.

Thanks for reading.

when you are saving the psd file are you always having PS save a preview as part of the file? if there is no preview generated for the viewer to use it will have just pull a layer and use that. I don't think that Faststone is actually capable of rendering a full multilayer PSD file.

Well.........., I honestly don't know; I was unaware of this saving a preview ability/requirement; is this an option I need to check in the "save as" box ?

For what it's worth, I have Elements 7.

I will definitely check this out.

Thanks so much for your insight and for answering my question; I appreciate it.

On EDIT:

I just opened a layered file and had a look in the "save as" box; there is no check-box option there for saving a preview.

So, I then looked in "editor preferences" and there is an option there for saving previews and it is/was set on "always save previews"

Is that the previews you are talking about ?

Thanks.

FS is very nice indeed. If no luck with your problem, consider trying XnView (MP version). It's free and quite nice as well. Not sure if it will have the same issues as FS, but might be worth a try.

Is XnView the same thing as IrfanView; I read really good reports on IrfanView. [On EDIT: I see that it is not the same.]

I will look at this XnView and may download it as well; I don't think there is any harm in having more than one program.

Thanks.

IrfanView is different, but good too.
