I don't want to buy a nice on until I'm sure I know how and actually will use it so I'm looking for one you've got laying around you don't need anymore. Cheap to free. Let me know what you've got.

Have you given eBay a try? There are lots of cheap ND filters floating around. I used a Bower ND1000 77mm that my friend got from eBay for about 30$. The only difference between it and my B&W was that the Bower had a stronger colour caste which was easily corrected in post.

Well I did just that. I was hoping to grab one here for that exact type of advice (knowing what it's weakness were) but now I've rolled the dice.
