Would you be willing to share your camera settings on how you got these nice shots? I went to a local college game on Saturday for my first try and was not as successful.

Jim,
I don't have any special settings but I'm glad to share with you what I do:
Custom White Balance
Shoot M, 1/800 SS, f/2.8, iso 10,000 (I know the metadata states 12,800, but that is incorrect)
I shot RAW
Import into LightRoom and tweak the exposure, move the Noise sliders to 40 luminance and color to 30, sharpen around 48 with a mask of 30.

All of these were shot with a Canon 1Dx and 70-200 f/2.8 IS II. I also bring with me a Sony a6000 with a 50mm f/1.8 for under the basket shots but I didn't have it with me that night.

Jim,

You may want to post your efforts even if they were not successful. Theron's settings are great for his equipment and the light levels he was working with but you might not be able to shoot at as high an ISO, your gym may be brighter (or darker), and your lenses may have a larger or smaller maximum aperture. It's OK to post images with problems. We're all here to learn and you can get good feedback.

Thanks Tmalone 893 & Zivnusk for the information. I just bought a Canon 7DII, and I have a 70 - 200 F2.8 II lens. I guess there is more to taking great pics than just the equipment. I changed a couple of settings and I changed to back button focus using AI servo. I am going to try again Saturday night. Hopefully I will have better results. :-)
I'll let you know how it goes.

Here are a couple from my first attempt. I had a friend process them in lightyear and they looked better than the software I use. These were shot with a Canon 7D mark II, using a 24 - 70 lens. Here are the camera settings:

First pic. ISO 1600, Shutter 1/640, F3.2, Focal length 70

Second pic. ISO 2500, Shutter 1/640, F3.2, Focal length 70

The ISO setting in the camera was set to auto.

The focus is off on both slightly. I am going back this Saturday with my 70 - 200 F2.8 II lens to try again. I have seen some incredible shots on this web sites. I am trying to get up to that level.

Any comments are appreciated

Not bad at all. Two things to watch/do
1. make sure your horizons are straight. They are close but just a tad tilted.
2. I would raise my shutter speed up to 1/800 if not 1/1000. Your 7DII should be able to handle up to iso 6400 with no issues.

I would get yourself a copy of LR/PS and do your own editing. I'm not a huge fan of the first one. It looks more like an oil painting than an image.

Jim,

These look good, great for the first attempt. I agree with Theron's comment about boosting the shutter speed a bit if you are looking for the best image possible. Take both your 24-70 and your 70-200mm to get a nice variety to your images. Lightroom and photoshop will be a good purchase if you are going to be shooting regularly. The pair are reasonably priced from adobe online.

Keep posting!
