Hi,
I have a 5dc that is misbehaving.

When I power it up, the red light on the back doesn't flash (not good). Also there is no battery indicator on the top LCD (not good). When I press the shutter, nothing happen (no click, no focus, etc.). When I press "play" or Menu, the back screen does not lid up. The view through the lens does not have information anymore : no focus point lighting up, no compensation scale.

The only thing that work, it the top LCD, when I press any o the top button (except the backlight) it works, I can change WB, ISO, DRIVE, exposure spot, change focus point, etc.

There is no error code. I swap all batteries CR2016 and BP511, the lens, CF card. Still the same problem.

This behavior is the same at all settings (P, Tv, Av, M, B, C)

Is it symptoms known for something? Is there any simple solutions?

Best regards,

If it is the case, is it worth fixing?

Is Cannon is servicing those bodies?

If not, what is a sensible upgrade: used 5d mkii or 6d? Will the price of those be lower after x-mas? It is a good thing I didn't start x-mas shopping, now I know where my budget will go...

Is there a market for dead bodies like that, or it is a case for trash?

Best regards,

Canon no longer services the 5d. Some third party vendors may, but the cost is probably not worth it.

Sell it on ebay as parts or not working. You can probably get $100 or more.

The 6d is the better option as an upgrade in my opinion. Newer product line so it will be supported longer, same autofocus, about 1 1/2 stops better in the high ISO noise, and less banding in the shadows. They have been going on sale at the Canon refurbished shop for $999 a couple times this holiday season- I'm guessing they will probably stay there in the next year.

Thanks. I will try to get money out of the broken 5d. It is a shame that now I will have to change to sd card, battery type, and my manual focus screen will not fit.

Does anyone know how to get refurbished canon item in Sweden (or Europe)?

There is no official Canon factory refurb available outside of the USA. So you are out of luck there. Unless you know someone in the US who can order one for you, then ship it over to you.

It's actually more, I've shot my friend's 6D at 25,600 and they were totally usable for big prints.

It's amazing.

I just realize that both the 5d mkiii and 6d have been there for a long time 4 years and 3+ years respectively. It is pure speculation, but what are the chance that the successor of any of those two shows up early next year (i.e. 2016) and the price drop greatly on their predecessor. I can probably live with my backup 40D in the meantime.

Also is there a usual post x-mas deal on that range of camera (5d, 6d)?

Thanks.

The 1DX II is rumored to be coming out before next years Olympic games. The 5DIV is rumored to be in the hands of some pro's who are test driving it, but no word on a release timeline yet.

I've never seen a post holiday deal on bodies. Usually the prices will start to drop before they are about to release it's successor.

You might get lucky with some rebates (they seem to have some combo rebates right now for up to $350)

Also, the 5DS models were recently released, so it's not like there haven't been new models in the 5 lineup but they're richly priced. You might be able to find somebody selling a 5d3 or 6d for a reasonable price to get one of those fancy newer cameras.

Sorry to hear about your camera. It's shocking how they become nearly worthless after a couple of years.

I had two year of fun with it, now it is bricked...

Hopefully someone will treat himself with a 5Ds for x-mas and sell his MK iii or 6D.
